Mozilla Drumbeat Challenge at NSC1

Have an idea about making the open web a better place? Mozilla is hosting a session at NSC1 that might be the perfect place to show it off. Dubbed “Drumbeat,” participants will have 5 minutes to either outline a concrete project idea that will make the web better or simply explain the open web and why it matters. This event takes place the evening of Day 1 at Neoteny Singapore Camp and presentations will be judged Joi Ito, Mark Surman and others.

Why?
Mozilla is launching a new initiative called Drumbeat in early 2010. The first step: find talented social entrepreneurs and communicators who want to create a better, more open internet. Your presentation is a chance to get involved in Mozilla Drumbeat early on, ensuring that you and your ideas are a part of the Drumbeat story right from the start.

What’s in it for me?
We’ll videotape, upload and feature your presentation on the Mozilla Drumbeat website.
‘Ideas’ presentations will be included in the Drumbeat project idea stream, offering an opportunity to attract attention, volunteers and supporters.
‘Ultimate’ talks will be entered into a global competition for best presentation.
If your idea or presentations is amongst the best globally, you’ll also have a chance to participate in the Drumbeat Festival, tentatively scheduled for June 2010 in Amsterdam.

Freesouls at NSC1

Earlier this year a published collection of portraits by Joi Ito called Freesouls was released. It contains 296 Portraits, as well as essays by Howard Rheingold, Lawrence Liang, Cory Doctorow, Yochai Benkler, Isaac Mao and Marko Ahtisaari. A Foreword by Lawrence Lessig and a Special Interview with Joi Ito. The book was published in a limited edition and it almost sold out, a few of those copies will be on hand in at NSC1 for any attendees who are interested in purchasing a copy at a special 40% off conference price. Event Venue

Good news! The team over at the Singapore Management University (SMU) Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) have graciously agreed to provide us with the venue on both days of the event.

We’ll get access to the large auditorium for our main plenary (morning half), as well as the adjacent seminar rooms (afternoon half). In addition, there will be several nearby classrooms that will be made available for adhoc private meetings for event attendees.

Neoteny Singapore Camp

Neoteny Labs Singapore is about to launch and what better way to celebrate than an event with all our friends?

For two days in December we’ll be gathering in Singapore and discussing a whole collection of topics from investing and incubating, to building start ups and hackerspaces. Hosted and organized by Joi Ito, Sean Bonner, James Chan and Tara Brown we’ll talk about why these things are interesting and important to us, and why we’re looking towards Singapore to do them.

The first part of each day will include panels and presentations from people who we think know what they are talking about. This will be followed in the afternoon by ad-hoc , barcamp style sessions created on the fly by presenters and people in attendance alike. We’re assuming these will develop into evening workshops as well. Saturday night will include an Open Web Presentation Challenge hosted by Mozilla that you can sign up to present at!
