One of the first companies we heard about when we started investigating the startup landscape in Singapore was Game Ventures. The CEO, Zaki, was rumored to be an extremely efficient and resourceful entrepreneur running a lean and agile team of engineers in Karachi with their headquarters in Singapore and an office in Turkey.
I first met Zaki in their apartment/office one evening jam packed with a switched-on team of developers working late on their latest game. Zaki explained to us that he was recruiting the best talent in Pakistan while also being tied to some of the brightest developers in Silicon Valley and elsewhere.
They are currently focused on sports games, Howzat – their cricket game, having just crossed half a million users. Howzat is arguably the only “real” live action browser-based multiplayer sports game out there.
Along with their sports games, they also run XuQa.com, a profitable social gaming network for Turkish audiences with customizable multiplayer “local” games.
In addition to how much we were impressed by Zaki, this was also a great opportunity to co-invest with some of the local angel investors and mentors like Jayesh and Varsha.
We’re excited by the new games in the pipeline, the quality of the team and the interesting geographic distribution that Game Ventures has initially targeted and hope they can scale their initial success into other markets.
